Letter to Mary Turok ,wife of late Professor Turok
Dear Mrs Turok
We at the Congress of Business and Economics (CBE) learnt with shock and deep sadness about the passing of Professor Turok, was an amazing role model who always spoke truth to power.
Professor Turok was always fearless in pursuit of justice and sound leadership.
That was the very reason he was selected as a recipient of the CBE Ahmed Kathrada Excellence in Leadership at our event which he graced together with you barely a few weeks ago.
It was a special tribute to a special man who until his very last breath was committed to the people of the country he loved so much when others would have opted for a quiet life away from the pressures and tensions of public duties.
We could hardly have sensed then that he would leave us so soon when, as he related to one of our members as he arrived, that there remained a lot of work to be done. Another member recalled Prof Turok’ s insistence that his Award not be brought to him at his table because he was temporarily in a wheelchair, but that he be assisted to get onto the stage.
His wise words spoken at the CBE awards dinner, both as he accepted the award and during the panel discussion, will likely remain his last and powerful message at a public event to the leadership of our country and to the movement that he so diligently served. It resonated extremely well with not only the CBE but with all our guests as well.
Sad as it may sound, his plea for the dire change required in the leadership of our country will now have even greater impact in his heartfelt absence.
May you and the family be granted strength through these trying times.
Rest in peace Professor Ben Turok.
